Probably, all parents sooner or later hear from their child a request to buy a skate. And immediately there are many questions: what is it like, how many years can you learn how to master it, what kind of skate it is better to choose a 5-year-old or a child 10-11 years old? Our article will help answer these and other frequently asked questions.

Design

Classic skateboard is a board (deck), covered with several layers of veneer and mounted on wheels. In some modern models (for example, in cruisers or longboards), the deck is made of plastic.

Skateboard can be used as a vehicle or sports equipment to perform tricks.

The skateboard design consists of several basic elements:

Deca. This is the skate board itself. It consists of several layers of glued maple veneer. Typically, this is 7 or 9 layers, but for lightweight models, 5 layers are used. For children’s skateboards, 6-7 layers of veneer are sufficient.
Griptape – the top cover of the deck. By its appearance it is very similar to sandpaper. Thanks to this self-adhesive tape, the legs do not slip off the skateboard while driving or performing tricks.
Suspension. Sturdy construction of metal for connecting wheels with the board. Most often it is made of an alloy of aluminum with other metals.
Wheels. The main criterion for choosing wheels is rigidity. It is sufficient rigidity that makes skate movements smoother. If there is a special platform for skating, the wheels can be soft. For an ordinary yard or street, it is best to choose a board with rigid wheels.
Bearings, linings, base, shock absorbers and other parts.

Types and types

Depending on the size and design, skateboards are divided into several types:

Longboard is a long board. Characterized by larger and softer wheels. The front part of the skate has a pointed appearance, the rear part is raised.
Cruiser – a board with 4 wheels, which is optimal for riding around the city and smooth roads. Wheels are usually soft or medium hard. Has a raised “tail” at the deck. This is the best option for teaching children from 5 years.
Streetboard, snakeboard. It consists of several platforms. Used to perform trick elements.
Freeboard. This board has 6 wheels. Used for freestyle.
Floodboard. Board with 14 wheels, characterized by high maneuverability, ideal for trick items.
Mountainboard. The board is designed for cross-country driving. It has wheels with a diameter of about 20 cm.
Stowboard. Foldable skateboard. Its main part is not a board, but a metal stand – a basket for the legs.

At what age should you start skateboarding?

Today on sale you can see a huge number of skateboards of a variety of designs, sizes and designs. The smallest and lightest models are designed for children 5-6 years old.

In general, it is considered that it is not necessary to skateboard children under 7-8 years old. Of course, you can put on a skate and 4-5 year old baby, but experts are unanimous in opinion: young children do not have good stability and coordination of movements. Therefore, early acquaintance with the skateboard can result in injuries.

At any age, the lessons should be started under the supervision of a more experienced and adult coach. For children from 4 to 5 years old, when riding, parents should hold one hand and insure against falling.

Note that the child’s body must be tilted forward, so parents need to go always ahead of the skateboard.

Which one is best for young children?

For the youngest athletes you can choose mini skateboards, the length of which does not exceed 22 inches. Skate should be strong, light, fairly elastic. Bright colors will be an additional advantage in favor of choosing the model you like.

How to choose the size of a skate according to age?

The basic rule of choosing a suitable skate is to match it with the age and growth of a young athlete.

The length of the standard board is from 78 to 83 cm, and the width is from 19 to 21.5 cm. However, this size is calculated for adults. Therefore, depending on the child’s age, there are different types of skateboards (it’s just a traditional skateboard, not a cruiser):

Skateboards for children whose growth has not yet reached 1 meter. The size of the skate is 27.2 – 27.6 x 6.5 – 6.75 inches (length – about 70 cm).
Children 6 – 8 years old, height up to 1.4 m. The size of the board is 28 x 7 inches. (length – up to 71 cm).
Children from 9 to 12 years old can grow up to 1.5 m. The size of the board is 29 x 7.3 inches (length up to 74 cm).
Children over 13 years. Adult sizes of skate are suitable.

The maximum length of a skateboard for kids is 22 inches
Manufacturers overview

Among the most famous and popular manufacturers of skateboards, it can be noted:

Alien Workshop. These are classic, solid boards with large bends. Designed for skating, not suitable for jumping elements.
Black Label. One of the most convenient models for beginners skateboarders. They have a stable, strong middle part of the board, but the front and back parts, thanks to the deep concave, may eventually break down.
Blind. The boards differ, above all, in their aesthetically attractive appearance. They have low weight.

Santa Cruz. Comfortable, strong boards of original design. Have a small bend.
Penny Board. High-quality Australian brand, which pays great attention to detail. It is this option that is most popular for small children.

On how not to fall for the bait of scammers and not buy a fake, see the following video on the example of the Penny Board skateboard:

Tips for choosing

When choosing the right skateboard for your child, you should pay attention to the following points:

Width of the deck. Can range from 4.7 to 10.62 inches. The narrower the board, the more maneuverable it is, the wider it is, the more stable it is. Beginners should choose models with a small width. In the learning process, you can choose the best fit for the width model.
Length of the deck. In principle, the length does not affect the speed and quality of skiing. The standard size is 31 inches (78.7 cm), but for very small athletes the length of the board may be shorter.
It is best to buy a skateboard, made not of plastic, but of maple veneer. Plastic models are much cheaper, but less resilient and durable than wooden ones.
Concave. Beginners skateboarders are best to buy flat boards, there is no sense in choosing skateboards with deep concave (bend). Such boards are suitable for more experienced athletes.
The surface of the board should be smooth and not have cracks, chips or dents. The tree can deform with time, so it’s best to buy a skateboard that was made recently.

What to consider when choosing for beginners?

When choosing a skate for a beginner athlete should not chase after the external beauty and original design.

The skateboard should have the simplest and most convenient form, the size corresponding to the age and height of the child, be made of quality materials.

Skate can be collected independently, acquiring the necessary details separately, but the beginning child is best to buy the finished board. Preference is given to brands of well-known, proven manufacturers. They will be more expensive than plastic analogs, but there will be a strong confidence in their quality, reliability and safety for the child.
How to learn to skate?

Skateboarding is a kind of extreme sport. It consists in performing tricks of varying degrees of difficulty with the help of a skateboard. There are many styles of skiing.

The most popular among them:

Flatland. Skating and doing tricks on a flat surface.
Straight. Skating in the street with the use of all kinds of stairs, railings, ceilings, etc.
Freestyle. Style, which is characterized by the performance of tricks and jumps in one plane.
Vert. Style with the execution of stunt elements on the ramp.
A park. Execution of especially complex and spectacular elements on the ramp.

The first thing with which it is worth starting training, is to choose a jogging leg. After you mastered the correct setting, you can learn to push off, move and stop. Do not hurry, the process should take some time.

On how to learn the basic elements of skateboarding, see the video of the school “VDvizheniye”:

What tricks can I perform?

The tricky part of skateboarding is, as a rule, the most experienced skateboarder. However, there are quite simple feints, which even an aspiring athlete can easily master.

Ollie (skate jump). One leg is placed on the back of the board (Tail), and the second – in the middle or a little further. Then, with the foot on the tile, click on the ground, and the second leg is stretched along the board, as if pulling it. In this case, the legs should be slightly bent. The jump, of course, will not work the first time. In skateboarding, the main thing is constant training. See the next video for more details.

Nolly. It reminds the alley with the only difference is that the movement starts with the foot that stands in front. It is clicked, and the second leg “pulls” the skateboard up.
Manual. A very simple element. The essence of it is as follows: the athlete, pressing the teil, lifts the front of the skateboard and tries to hold onto the balance, balancing and helping himself with his hands.

You can learn this element faster by watching the next video.

Ollie with a turn. Similar to the ally element, only during its execution it is necessary to try to turn on the spot together with the board. The element begins just like an olly, only after clicking on the ground, the second foot has to be twisted by the skate, turning in the same direction and himself. You can help with your hands.

Visualize how to perform the trick Ollie with a turn, you can in the next video.

Kickflip. The most complex of the elements presented. It is based on the same allie, only during its execution it is necessary to try to twist the skate horizontally. The exercise is done in motion. First you need to do an exercise of an ally, and when the front leg reaches the bend of the board, you must sharply twist it. After the rotation, the board stops with two legs.

Safety and security

Any skateboarder, regardless of his level of training, needs protection, because skateboarding is quite a traumatic sport.

For training, it is best to choose loose clothing from natural fabrics and comfortable shoes. It is necessary to use the means to protect the most vulnerable parts of the body: helmet, protection for elbows, knees, wrists and shins.
